Meet your calf (soleus) muscle

a quick introduction

Please refer to the image on the right (or below for mobile) for a view of your soleus muscle in red on the right leg from the back.

As a runner, triathlete, hockey player, soccer player or any kind of athlete, how often do you think about your calf muscle? If you're new to anatomy, here is a quick piece of information: that calf muscle is comprised of two muscles! The soleus muscle and the gastrocnemius.

Your soleus muscle is a flat, broad muscle that sits under the gastrocnemius. It's primary responsibility is plantarflexion of your foot (pointing it downwards). It's a key player in helping you walk, run and maintaining your balance. No wonder it get's tired, tight and sore.

We will be targeting what are known as the origin sites of your soleus muscle:

  1. This point will be targeted by the rubber diamond on the top strap.
  2. This point, which lies on the front side of your leg, will be targeted by the rubber diamond on the second strap.
  3. This point will be targeted by the rubber diamond on the third strap.
